Gaussia maya - Maya Palm
Gaussia maya is an elegant palm native to Central America, which in its natural environment reaches 5–20 meters in height. It features a slender, gray trunk with a diameter of 10–15 cm, occasionally up to 30 cm, which shows a slight swelling at the base when young. The crown usually consists of 6–8 large, pinnate leaves, each of which can grow up to about 2.7 m long.
The leaves of this palm are arranged in multiple planes, giving them a distinctive, light, plume-like appearance despite the relatively small number in the crown. Each leaf consists of numerous leaflets arranged around the rachis, creating a dense, feather-like structure. The trunk remains smooth throughout the plant’s life, with visible marks from fallen leaves.
Conservation status and availability
Gaussia maya is classified as a Vulnerable species due to habitat destruction, and its population in the wild is small. This rare palm is occasionally available for sale, making it an interesting option for palm collectors and enthusiasts of exotic species with a distinctive form.
Growing requirements
This species is suited for locations where the temperature does not drop below about -3°C – lower temperatures can cause serious damage. Young plants prefer a partially shaded, moist, and well-drained site, while older specimens tolerate more sun and can even grow in full sun in coastal areas. However, they look best in light shade.
The palm requires warmth and consistent moisture but is tolerant of various soil types as long as they are well-drained. In the temperate climate zone of Europe, it can only be grown in containers under greenhouse or conservatory conditions, with high temperatures maintained year-round. Due to its susceptibility to strong winds, it is not recommended for exposed sites.
Uses
This remarkable palm is an excellent choice for collectors seeking rare and unusual species. Its elegant form and distinctive botanical features make it a valuable addition for lovers of exotic plants. In home cultivation, it thrives in bright conservatories or as a patio plant during the summer months.
